A.R. Rehman Music Concert: Washington DC

I went to the AR. Rehman Show on Sunday night alongwith several UMBC friends. It was total paisa vasool. After a period of 3 or so years, A.R. Rehman returned back for his US tour alongwith his entire troupe, that included Hariharan, Sukhvinder Singh, Chitra, Sadhana Sargam, Naresh Iyer (of Rang de Basanti fame) and of course the famous drummer, Sivamani. Washington DC was their last halt; after New York, Chicago and other cities.

I had first seen A.R. Rehman on Mumbai-London flight back in 2002. He was right ahead of me in the queue, just before the entry to the security lounge at the Mumbai airport. The officer just waved him through, while checking the passports for the rest of us. This was the second time I saw him. His troupe of 66 artists (singers, dancers, musicians) enthralled the thousands of Indians at the Patriot Center in Virginia (capacity: 10000). The show started at about 8:00 pm and continued non-stop till 11:30; and the crowd still danced, sang and rocked alongwith him till the very end. The stage was magnificient, especially the background animation and the lights & colors used according to the beat of the songs. I think about 30 or so songs must have been played, all hits from movies like Rang de Basanti, Guru, Roza, Taal, Lagaan, Bombay, Saathiya, Dil Se etc. There were a few Tamil movie songs, I think from some movie called Sivaji, which made the Tamilians go berserk. Rehman himself sang few songs - "Dil Se", "Humma Humma", "Pray for me brother" and ended with his trademark 'Vande Mataram', which culminated with tons of confetti sprayed over the audience and some great fireworks.

While the audience went crazy the moment A.R. Rehman appeared on the stage in white kurta at the beginning of the show, it was not until Sukhwinder's "Chaiya Chaiya" that set the crowd on fire. Almost everyone were up from their seats, dancing to the tune and imitating Malaika & Shahrukh. The song lasted atleast 8-10 minutes. A group of college-going students even brought a huge Indian flag, just like in a cricket stadium. The other high-points of the night were Sivamani's solo with the drums (was he amazing or what!) and the performance for the song Maiya Maiya. I dont know who sang that song, but she was awesome dancer as well. Would have given Malika Sherawat a run for her money. Apart from Sukhwinder, among the male singers, Hariharan and a Rajasthani guy, wearing a red turban, wowed the crowds. Chitra and Sadhana Sargam, with their sweet voices, complemented them.

Personally, I think it was one helluva night and worth every penny, although it would have been better if the stage were a little bigger. It seemed on occasions that the dancers didn't have enough space to perform, what with Sivamani with his array of instruments using up left side and other musicians the right side of the stage. The sound quality, atleast in the beginning, sounded little rough; but didn't notice much during the rest of the show. Maybe the folks didn't get enough time to test the settings, I heard they came straight from New York the previous night.

Who is the king of the jungle?
This video is probably the hottest video on YouTube right now. In just one month, it has been viewed almost 5 million times, favorited like 24000 times and got more than 6000 comments. Lions attack baby buffalo, crocodiles snatch buffalo, lions win it back, senior buffaloes rebel, lions are toast. This is one hell of a teamwork on display. And a bunch of loser lions!

Chat Evolution
Ages 16-20: Teenagers usually have funky chat names when they are online on chat messengers:

Ages 20-24: And then, when they are in their early 20's, during their undergraduate days, they become rebellious and keep their status as 'Busy', even when they are not.

Present: The chat nicknames slowly become sober and the status changes to "Appear Offline".

And 3 years from now?
